Like most people, I am scared of climate change and also extremely alarmed by the environmental crisis which is unfolding before us. The dramatic fall in insect numbers over recent years is particularly worrying, as without them the whole of the natural world will struggle to survive. We are simply lost without insects!
I have been working as an illustrator for over 20 years, collaging images for various magazines and publishing companies. It occurred to me that I should put my creative skills to positive use and create illustrations which are designed to communicate the vital importance of insects and the immense potential of our urban open spaces to be a haven for wildlife. I began by illustrating the insect species living in and around my tiny city garden and was astonished by the diversity of creatures I found. So far I have collaged over 200 invertebrates (many of them spotted in my garden) and I am only just getting started. Buzz & Scuttle aims to educate and inspire positive action by whole communities, creating a giant network of wild city gardens, playgrounds and parks, buzzing and scuttling with insect life. I hope to show clearly that small actions can make a positive difference and we can all help insects to thrive.
